Algeria has one of the largest Algerian-heritage communities in Western Europe, and many British nationals of Algerian descent travel regularly to visit family there. That makes Algeria a more frequent repatriation origin than its tourism numbers alone would suggest, and families dealing with it for the first time tend to ask the same handful of questions.
Why the province matters more than the country
Algeria has no single national authority issuing body transport permits. Each of its 58 wilayas handles this itself through the laissez-passer mortuaire. Algiers wilaya has seen enough international cases to move at a reasonable pace. Tamanrasset, Illizi, and Adrar, in the remote south, have not, and processing there can be markedly slower. Where a death occurs outside Algiers, moving the body there before starting the permit process is often the faster path overall, even accounting for the transfer itself.
Ministry of Interior approval is required on top of the wilaya permit before international transport can proceed. That single step typically adds three to seven days on its own.
Who investigates an unnatural death
Jurisdiction splits by geography, not by the nature of the death alone. Police Judiciaire handles cities. Gendarmerie Nationale covers rural and regional areas, which is most of the country by land area. Both issue a clearance letter once satisfied, but Gendarmerie cases generally run longer, reflecting the wider territory and lower case volume each station handles. Complex post-mortems go to the Institut National de Medecine Legale at CHU Mustapha in Algiers, with regional facilities in Oran and Constantine for local cases.
The translation step families underestimate
Every document is in Arabic. A good number are also in French. Neither has any standing with UK authorities until certified into English by a recognised translator. This isn’t a formality to skip past; incorrect or uncertified translations get rejected, and redoing them costs real time. A specialist firm with Algeria experience will already have translator relationships that meet the required standard.
Getting the body to the UK
There’s no direct flight. Houari Boumediene Airport in Algiers handles the main international cargo traffic, with Air Algerie and Air France both routing through Paris Charles de Gaulle, and a further option via Frankfurt. Oran and Constantine airports serve as regional alternatives for deaths closer to those cities. Cremation is not available; Algeria is a Muslim-majority country operating under Islamic law.
