A holiday to Lake Titicaca or the Uyuni Salt Flat can turn into something far more serious within hours. Altitude sickness kills UK visitors to Bolivia every year, and the legal process that follows catches most families by surprise.
Why altitude deaths aren’t treated as natural
Soroche can cause fatal pulmonary or cerebral oedema with almost no warning, sometimes within a day of arriving at altitude. Bolivian law still classifies it as an unnatural death. That means the FELCC and the Fiscalia take jurisdiction before anything else can happen, regardless of how clear the medical cause appears to the family or the attending doctor. Do not assume this step can be skipped because the cause seems obvious.
Where the post-mortem happens
The Instituto de Investigaciones Forenses carries out the examination once the Fiscalia has opened its file. IDIF operates in La Paz and Santa Cruz. A death near Uyuni, at Tiwanaku, or in the Amazon basin around Rurrenabaque means transfer to one of those two cities first, before the forensic clock even starts running.
Geography drives the routing
Bolivia has no coastline and no direct UK flights. Viru Viru International Airport in Santa Cruz handles most outbound cargo, connecting through Lima on LATAM or through Sao Paulo before reaching Heathrow. El Alto, the airport serving La Paz, sits over 4,000 metres above sea level. That altitude limits payload and aircraft type, which is one reason Santa Cruz has become the more reliable cargo gateway for repatriation cases.
Getting the paperwork right
SERECI, Bolivia’s civil registry, issues the Acta de Defuncion. If the Fiscalia is involved, its release order and the IDIF report join the document set, alongside a Ministry of Health export permit and an embalming certificate. Everything arrives in Spanish. Certified English translation is not optional for UK acceptance.
