Cabo Verde has become one of the most popular UK package holiday destinations in West Africa, with direct flights from regional airports straight to Sal and Boa Vista. Most cases start at a resort on one of those two islands. Some don’t, and that’s where the timeline changes.
Ten islands, one repatriation route
The archipelago spans roughly 400 kilometres of open Atlantic. Sal and Boa Vista, where most British visitors stay, connect fairly directly to international cargo routing. Fogo, Santo Antao, Sao Nicolau, Sao Vicente, Brava, and Maio don’t have that connection. A death on any of these smaller islands means the remains travel to Sal or Santiago first, by air on Cabo Verde Airlines or charter, or in some cases by a ferry-and-air combination. That inter-island leg alone typically adds 3 to 7 days before the main international flight is even booked.
Who handles the paperwork
There’s no resident British Embassy in Cabo Verde. The British Embassy in Dakar, Senegal, holds formal accreditation and manages consular registration for anything beyond the basics. An Honorary Consul in Praia can register a death provisionally and notify Dakar, but doesn’t have the authority to take a case through to completion alone.
No cremation, anywhere on the islands
This one surprises families who assume it’s simply a question of finding a facility. It isn’t available at all, on any of the ten islands. If cremation is what the family wants, the body still has to reach the UK first; the decision happens on arrival, not in Cabo Verde.
The water sports risk
Surfing, kiteboarding, and diving deaths are a recurring pattern among British visitors, particularly off Sal’s northern coast and around Boa Vista, where conditions can be more demanding than they appear from the beach. Where a drowning isn’t immediately recovered, the timeline for everything that follows, including the forensic examination the Instituto Nacional de Medicina Legal requires for non-natural deaths, starts later than the date of death itself.
