The first calls to make
Local police answer on 117, fire on 118, and ambulance on 119. Cambodian hospital capacity is inconsistent: expect a reasonable standard in Phnom Penh’s better facilities, and considerably less in rural areas or smaller towns. Contact the British Embassy in Phnom Penh as soon as the immediate emergency response is underway, since its consular capacity for remote cases in Siem Reap or Sihanoukville is limited and earlier contact helps.
An unusual document trail
The death certificate doesn’t come from a hospital or a central registry. It comes from the Sangkat, the local commune council, backed by a police report. This step typically takes 5 to 14 days, longer if the death occurred somewhere without straightforward access to the relevant commune office. Patience with the pace of the bureaucracy matters here more than in most corridors on this site.
Why the flight home takes longer
Cambodia Angkor Air, the main domestic and regional carrier, has very limited cargo capacity for international repatriation. Most cases route instead through Bangkok on Thai Airways or through Singapore on Singapore Airlines, adding a connection and time that a more direct corridor wouldn’t need. Combined with the 10 to 21 days documentation typically takes, a straightforward case commonly runs 14 to 28 days from death to arrival in the UK.
Where the body is prepared
Phnom Penh has the country’s most reliable embalming facilities. Deaths in Siem Reap, near the Angkor temples, or in Sihanoukville, are usually transferred there first rather than embalmed locally, since facilities elsewhere are considerably more basic.
