Cameroon carries a colonial-era administrative split that still shapes how a death is processed today. Knowing which system applies, French or English, is the first question any family needs answered.
A country administered two ways
After the First World War, Cameroon was divided between French and British mandate rule. The division never fully disappeared. The eight Francophone regions, including the capital Yaounde and the commercial centre Douala, follow French civil law tradition, with documentation in French. The North West and South West regions retained English-language administration from the British mandate period. Which system applies to a given case depends entirely on where in the country the death occurred, and it determines both the language of every document and the administrative process itself.
The Tribunal de Grande Instance’s role
Deaths are registered at the local Centre d’Etat Civil. Where the death wasn’t natural, the Judicial Police investigate under the Tribunal de Grande Instance, which must order any post-mortem and authorise the body’s release before anything further can happen. The Centre Hospitalier Universitaire in Yaounde or Douala handles the more complex post-mortem examinations.
The Anglophone regions carry real constraints
Since 2017, the North West and South West regions have experienced serious security disruption, and the FCDO advises against all travel to both. A death in either region isn’t simply a matter of language difference from a Yaounde or Douala case: it involves genuine access constraints that sit on top of the standard process and require specialist, current local knowledge to manage safely.
Getting home
Cameroon has no direct UK air service. Air France’s route through Paris CDG and Ethiopian Airlines through Addis Ababa are the two established options, and either involves at least one connection before the flight lands in the UK.
