Consular coverage from another country
CAR has no resident British Embassy. Every consular matter for British nationals goes through the British Embassy in Yaounde, Cameroon, which registers the death and advises on what’s realistically achievable given current conditions on the ground. This non-resident arrangement means a case starts with an extra step of coordination that most corridors don’t require.
Bangui, and only Bangui
Armed groups, including former Seleka factions and anti-Balaka militias, control large parts of the country outside the capital. The FCDO advises against all travel to every area of CAR outside Bangui, and even within Bangui itself, the advisory is against all but essential travel. In practice, this means Bangui is the only location where a case is achievable through ordinary civilian channels; recovery from elsewhere in the country isn’t.
A security picture shaped by Wagner
Russian Wagner Group, now known as Africa Corps, has operated in CAR since 2018 and holds real influence over the government’s military operations. For a family, this matters because non-natural deaths can draw in both the Forces Armées Centrafricaines and, given the wider security context, the UN’s MINUSCA peacekeeping mission, adding layers to the clearance process that a more stable country wouldn’t involve.
The route out of Bangui
Bangui M’Poko International Airport offers three main options: Ethiopian Airlines via Addis Ababa, currently the most dependable; a direct Air France service to Paris CDG with UK connections; and Kenya Airways via Nairobi. Given how quickly conditions can shift, it’s worth confirming the current schedule before any booking is finalised against a specific route.
