Three islands, one gateway
Grande Comore, Anjouan, and Moheli each run their own local administration under the federal government of the Union of the Comoros, but only Grande Comore, home to the capital Moroni, has an airport capable of handling international cargo. A death on Anjouan or Moheli means an inter-island transfer first, typically by small charter aircraft or boat, before the wider process can even begin. It’s rarely more than a day or two of delay, but it’s a step families aren’t always told to expect.
A faith that shapes the timeline
Comoros is almost entirely Sunni Muslim, and the pressure for a quick local burial is real and well understood in the community. That doesn’t mean repatriation isn’t possible. It means the window for a decisive first contact, both with local authorities and with a specialist firm, matters more here than in most corridors. Every early hour genuinely counts.
Registering the death
Comoros combines French civil law with Islamic personal status law. A physician certifies the cause of death, and the civil registrar then issues the acte de deces, in French and Arabic, through the etat civil of whichever island the death occurred on. Where the death wasn’t natural, the Gendarmerie Nationale has to attend first and issue its own clearance before the registrar can act.

Once the paperwork is in order
The Ministry of Health issues the export permit once civil registration and any Gendarmerie clearance are complete, and a licensed funeral director handles embalming. Every French and Arabic document needs certified English translation.
From Prince Said Ibrahim International Airport in Moroni, three routes connect onward to London: Air Austral via Reunion, Ethiopian Airlines via Addis Ababa, and Kenya Airways via Nairobi. All of them involve at least two connections, so cargo coordination needs planning well ahead.
