The Czech Republic receives several hundred thousand British visitors each year. Prague is one of Europe’s most popular short-break destinations; Brno, Karlovy Vary, Český Krumlov, and the Bohemian countryside attract leisure and cultural tourists. The Czech Republic is also home to a small British expatriate community working in manufacturing, technology, and financial services.
Czech repatriation is one of the more efficient European cases. The country’s administrative system is well-organised, Prague has strong forensic medical infrastructure, and the airport has regular direct connections to UK cities.
The státní zastupitelství and forensic process
All sudden, violent, or unexplained deaths in the Czech Republic are reported to the státní zastupitelství (state prosecutor’s office). The prosecutor determines whether the death requires a forensic post-mortem (soudní pitva). Forensic post-mortems are conducted at the Ústav soudního lékařství (forensic medicine institutes) attached to medical universities.
Prague’s main forensic institute is at Charles University Medical Faculty (1. lékařská fakulta UK). Regional institutes operate in Brno, Ostrava, Plzeň, and Olomouc.
For natural deaths where a physician certifies the cause, the prosecutor typically reviews documentation rather than ordering a post-mortem. This can be resolved in 2 to 4 working days. For sudden or unexplained deaths, the prosecutor may order a full post-mortem, which takes 7 to 14 working days to be completed and cleared.
Death registration
Death registration is handled by the Matrika (Civil Registry Office) of the municipality where the death occurred. The death certificate (úmrtní list) is issued in Czech. Certified translation into English is required for UK purposes. Czech certified translators are available in Prague and other major cities. The British Embassy in Prague can provide a translator contact list.
Embalming and transport
Prague has several funeral homes with experience in international repatriation. Embalming to IATA standards is available. The export permit is issued by the relevant regional Hygienická stanice (Public Health Station) after the embalming certificate and legal clearances are complete.
