Equatorial Guinea is the only Spanish-speaking country in sub-Saharan Africa, a fact that surprises most people the first time they hear it. The mainland has limited road infrastructure in places, and the body has to reach Malabo, by internal flight or overland where the roads allow, before the export process can even begin. This single geographic fact shapes the timeline of almost every mainland case.
Spanish documentation, and one more thing to know
Every official document, the certificado de defuncion, the embalming certificate, the export permit itself, is issued in Spanish and needs certified English translation. Beyond the language, families should understand that Equatorial Guinea has been governed by President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo since 1979, one of the longest-serving governments anywhere in the world. No cremation option
There are no cremation facilities in Equatorial Guinea. Full body repatriation to the UK is the only route home, whatever a family’s usual preference might be.
