Registration under French civil law
Guinea’s civil registration runs through the etat civil. The attending physician certifies cause of death in French, and the civil registrar issues the acte de deces. Non-natural deaths bring in the Gendarmerie Nationale, who must attend and issue clearance, and where an examining magistrate’s review is needed, the Tribunal de Premiere Instance as well. For a straightforward accident in Conakry, this stage runs 7 to 14 days.
The final steps before release
Once civil registration and Gendarmerie clearance are both in place, the Ministry of Health issues the export permit, and a licensed funeral director embalms and prepares the body. Every document needs certified English translation before UK authorities can act on it.
One region carries more risk
The N’Zerekore area, Guinea’s forested southeastern region, sees periodic inter-communal violence, and access can tighten quickly after an incident. If a case falls in this area, confirming current security conditions comes before any discussion of timeline.
Getting home from Conakry
Air France maintains scheduled service between Conakry-Gbessia International Airport and Paris CDG, still the most dependable route for UK cargo despite everything else that’s changed politically. Royal Air Maroc via Casablanca, Ethiopian Airlines via Addis Ababa, and Brussels Airlines are the backup options.
