Iraq isn’t one country for repatriation logistics purposes. It’s four or five different environments wearing the same passport stamp, and which one your case falls into decides almost everything about how it unfolds.
The regional picture, honestly stated
The Kurdistan Region, Erbil, Sulaymaniyah, Duhok, functions well. Civil administration works, and the British Consulate in Erbil gives direct, resident consular support. Cases here tend to move at the faster end of what’s realistic.
Baghdad and central Iraq sit a step up in complexity. Civil administration still functions, but more slowly, and some suburban areas have a militia presence that adds friction. The British Embassy in Baghdad handles these.
Southern Iraq, Basra, Najaf, Karbala, brings Iranian-backed militia activity into the picture in some areas. Documentation runs through Basra and provincial offices, and routing typically goes via Dubai.
The north and west, Mosul, Anbar, the Nineveh Plains, are the hardest cases this service sees anywhere. Residual activity from remnants of ISIL persists in pockets, and disputed administrative territory between federal and Kurdistan authorities complicates who has jurisdiction at all.
What has to happen before a body can travel
Death certification runs through the Civil Status Directorate, known locally as Mudiriyyat al-Ahwal al-Madaniyyah. Where the cause of death isn’t natural, the Medico-Legal Directorate has to clear the case first, and the Ministry of Interior then issues the export permit. Documentation is in Arabic across most of the country, in Kurdish within the Kurdistan Region, and every document needs a certified English translation before it’s any use in the UK.
Islamic burial timing
Around 97% of Iraq is Muslim, and burial within 24 hours is the strongly observed custom. Repatriation to the UK takes far longer than that, so scholars permit delay where the family is based abroad, but only once the family has made that intention clear early. Getting the body home
Baghdad International Airport routes through Istanbul, Dubai, or Amman. Erbil International Airport has its own Istanbul and Dubai connections, plus an occasional seasonal direct link to Heathrow. Basra International Airport routes through Dubai only.
