Death registration goes through the PMLP, the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs, which issues the Mirsanas apliecība, the death certificate, in Latvian. That certificate needs certified translation into English before it means anything to a UK Coroner, and your repatriation firm handles that through a sworn translator.
Where the death wasn’t natural, the State Police investigate, and if criminal proceedings look possible, the Prokuratūra has to give clearance too. That’s usually the only step that pushes the timeline out beyond the shorter end of the range.
The flight home
Riga International Airport has frequent direct flights to London Gatwick, Stansted, and Luton, operated by Ryanair, Wizz Air, and airBaltic, a flight of roughly three hours. That direct connection is a real advantage over corridors where cargo has to transit through a third country first.
If cremation is the family’s preference
Cremation is available locally, with crematoria operating in Riga and Daugavpils. Ashes come home in a sealed urn if that’s the route chosen instead of a full repatriation.
Worth knowing
The FCDO does flag awareness of the security context near Latvia’s borders with Russia and Belarus, though this rarely affects a repatriation case directly. Latvia’s process is still one that benefits from specialist coordination, particularly around the Prokuratūra step, even if it’s a considerably shorter journey than many of the corridors this service covers.
