Founded in the 1820s by freed American and Caribbean settlers, Liberia kept the legal and administrative language of its founders. That single historical fact makes a real practical difference today: English runs through every stage of a Liberian repatriation case, and there’s a resident British Embassy in Monrovia to go with it.
What that actually means for a family
No certified translation step. That alone sets Liberia apart from most of its West African neighbours, where French or Portuguese documentation adds real time and cost before a case can even reach the UK end of the process. How a case moves through the system
Death registration goes through Liberia’s national civil registration office, with the attending physician certifying cause of death in English throughout. Where a death isn’t natural, the Liberia National Police has to investigate and clear the case first, generally three to seven days for something straightforward in Monrovia. Only once that’s done does the Ministry of Health issue the export permit, and a licensed funeral director takes care of embalming and preparation.
Outside the capital, the picture changes
Liberia’s road network thins out fast once you leave Monrovia, particularly in the rubber plantation counties of Margibi and Bong and in the mining regions further afield. A death outside the capital needs a road transfer before anything else can proceed, and the rainy season, May to October, can make some of those routes genuinely impassable. This is where local knowledge starts to matter more than the paperwork itself.
Getting the body home
Roberts International Airport sits 60 kilometres east of Monrovia, a one to two hour ground transfer. Brussels Airlines to Brussels is the primary UK cargo route from there, with Ethiopian Airlines via Addis Ababa and Royal Air Maroc via Casablanca as the usual alternatives.
