How death registration works
The attending physician issues a Certificat médical de constat de décès, the medical certificate of cause of death. The relevant commune’s Etat Civil, the Civil Status Registry, then issues the Acte de décès, the formal death certificate. Luxembourg City’s own Etat Civil covers the capital; smaller communes handle their own. This moves quickly by European standards.
If the death wasn’t straightforward
Violent, sudden, or unexplained deaths go to the Parquet Général, the public prosecutor’s office. Luxembourg’s judicial system is efficient and well resourced, so Parquet involvement for a straightforward accident typically adds three to five days, not the weeks families sometimes face elsewhere in Europe. The State Laboratory, the Laboratoire National de Santé, carries out forensic examinations when required.
Language and the road to home
Luxembourg has three official languages, Luxembourgish, French, and German, with French most common in administrative paperwork.
