The Maldives is a honeymoon and luxury tourism destination that receives a significant number of British visitors each year. The archipelago consists of 1,192 islands across 26 atolls spread over 90,000 square kilometres of the Indian Ocean. Most British visitors stay at private island resorts accessible only by seaplane or speedboat.
The defining characteristic of Maldivian repatriation is geography: every resort island is remote from Male, the capital, and Male is the only place where post-mortem examination and export documentation can be processed. Every case begins with a transfer from the resort to Male.
Resort island to Male: the first step
When a death occurs on a resort island, the first call is to the resort management, who notify the Maldivian Police Service. The body cannot leave the island and cannot be prepared for export until a police officer has attended and the Maldivian Police Service has given clearance.
Transfer to Male is by seaplane or speedboat. Seaplane operations are weather-dependent and operate daylight hours only; night seaplane operations do not take place in the Maldives. The travel time from a distant atoll to Male by seaplane is 30 to 90 minutes in the air, but scheduling, weather, and loading logistics mean the actual time from death to arrival in Male can be 12 to 48 hours.
For deaths in atolls that have no seaplane access — served only by scheduled boat — the transfer time is longer.
Male processing: IGMH and Maldives Police
Post-mortem examinations are conducted at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) in Male. The Maldivian Police Service must formally complete their investigation and issue clearance before the export permit can be processed by the Ministry of Health.
For natural deaths in resort settings — a cardiac event, a snorkelling fatality — the process can resolve in 5 to 10 days once the body is in Male. For drownings and diving accidents where the cause of death requires more careful forensic determination, the process takes longer.
No cremation
The Maldives is an Islamic state. Cremation is not available. All repatriations involve full-body transport.
Limited medical infrastructure
The Maldives has limited medical infrastructure outside Male. There is no forensic pathology capacity outside IGMH. There is no second pathology opinion available locally. This concentration means the case cannot proceed while the body is anywhere other than Male.
British High Commission
The nearest British diplomatic post is the British High Commission in Colombo, Sri Lanka. There is no British Embassy in the Maldives. The High Commission in Colombo handles Maldives consular cases. Emergency number: +44 20 7008 5000.
Routing
Velana International Airport in Male (MLE) is the only international airport. Sri Lankan Airlines and British Airways have historically operated connections. Emirates via Dubai and Qatar Airways via Doha are the standard routes to the UK. There are no direct Maldives–UK flights.
Timelines
Resort island death, transfer to Male and natural cause: 14 to 18 days. Drowning or diving accident with full investigation: 18 to 25 days. Remote atoll with boat-only access: add 2 to 5 days.
