The Gobi desert, the open steppe, and the Altai mountains have made Mongolia a real growth destination for UK adventure travel: trekking, horse riding, overlanding tours. The British Embassy in Ulaanbaatar has handled UK traveller deaths before and knows the process. What it can’t change is the geography.
Recovery comes before anything else
Mongolia is the most sparsely populated country on earth, and outside Ulaanbaatar there are very few paved roads. If someone dies in the Gobi, on the steppe, or in the Altai range, the body has to reach Ulaanbaatar before the standard administrative process can begin. The Mongolian National Emergency Management Agency coordinates the response: helicopter where the location allows it, vehicle convoy where it doesn’t. Expect this stage alone to take one to five days, longer if weather closes operations, which happens fairly often in the Altai and central regions during autumn and spring.
The State Forensic Science Center
Every violent, sudden, or unexplained death goes through the State Forensic Science Center in Ulaanbaatar. The National Police Agency attends first. If the death happened outside the capital, the body has to be transported there for examination, on top of any recovery already needed. This stage typically runs five to fourteen days. Natural deaths in a hospital setting move faster: the attending physician certifies cause of death, and the Civil Registration and Information Department usually issues the certificate within one to three working days.
Getting home
Chinggis Khaan International Airport, which opened in 2021 outside Ulaanbaatar, has no direct UK service. Cargo routes via Beijing, using MIAT Mongolian Airlines or Air China, or via Seoul Incheon on Korean Air. Both cities connect on to London multiple times a day; Beijing tends to be the busier route for this kind of cargo.
Cremation is available in Ulaanbaatar and is worth discussing early with the Embassy and a specialist firm, since transporting ashes home is considerably simpler than a full body repatriation from this part of the world.
