The British High Commission in Maputo provides the kind of consular assistance you’d expect from a Commonwealth country. But the death certificate, the post-mortem report, and the export permit all come out in Portuguese, and UK authorities won’t accept any of it without certified English translation. That’s not a formality to skip. The Conservatória do Registo Civil issues the Atestado de Óbito, Mozambique’s death certificate. Where the death was sudden or unnatural, the Polícia de Investigação Criminal opens an investigation first, and the Government Pathologist at Hospital Central de Maputo performs the post-mortem. Only once that’s complete does the Ministry of Health issue the laissez-passer mortuaire, the document that actually authorises the body to leave the country. There’s no working two of these in parallel.
No direct flights
Maputo International Airport connects to Johannesburg O.R. Tambo on LAM Mozambique Airlines and South African Airways, and cargo moves on from there to Heathrow or Gatwick. Beira Airport offers an alternative routing for deaths in central Mozambique. Either way, transit through South Africa brings its own paperwork, since South African Civil Aviation Authority standards for handling human remains have to be met too.
The coast, and the north
Most British visitors come for the coastline: Tofo Beach, the Bazaruto Archipelago, Vilanculos. Provincial hospitals there have uneven documentation capacity, so a death often needs a transfer to Maputo before the process can properly begin. In the north, the FCDO advises against all travel to parts of Cabo Delgado province. A death in that area brings restricted consular access and a genuinely unpredictable timeline; call the British High Commission Maputo immediately if this applies to your situation.
