Palau is about as far from a straightforward repatriation as this job gets. Roughly 340 islands scattered in the western Pacific, world-famous for diving, and a genuine draw for a small but steady number of British visitors each year. Getting a loved one home from there is a different matter entirely.
The remoteness problem
There’s no getting around it: Palau sits a long way from anywhere with a direct UK connection. Every case has to route through Manila, about 500km to the west, or through Guam. Neither leg is short, and neither is optional. A specialist firm plans the whole journey from the outset rather than improvising once the paperwork clears.
What happens on the ground
Death registration goes through Palau’s national civil registration authority. Where the death wasn’t from natural causes, the Palau Police Department has to investigate and sign off before release, a legacy of the territory’s period under US administration that still shapes how the process works today.
Mortuary capacity is the real constraint. Koror has embalming services, but they’re limited in scale. A body needing complex preparation may need extra time simply because the local infrastructure can only handle so much at once.
Cremation isn’t available anywhere on the island. If a family wants ashes rather than a full repatriation, that decision has to be made after the body reaches a country with the facilities to do it, not before.
Getting home
Most cases run 14 to 42 days, a wide range that reflects how much depends on flight availability through Manila or Guam rather than on the paperwork itself. The FCDO advises standard precautions for Palau; the difficulty here is logistics, not politics.
