Most people couldn’t place São Tomé and Príncipe on a map, and that’s fair; it’s a former Portuguese colony of two small islands in the Gulf of Guinea, about 300 kilometres off the coast of Gabon. British visitors tend to be birdwatchers, divers, or cocoa-tourism travellers rather than mass-market tourists, which means a death there is rare, and when it happens, few UK families have anywhere to start.
Two islands change the maths
São Tomé, the larger island and capital, holds the only international airport. Príncipe sits 150 kilometres away, connected by a limited internal flight schedule operated by STP Airways. If someone dies on Príncipe, that internal leg has to happen before any of the international documentation process can properly begin. It’s worth knowing this early, because it changes what a realistic timeline looks like from the very first phone call.
Mortuary and cold storage capacity is limited on both islands compared with larger African cities. A specialist firm needs to confirm holding arrangements straight away, not as an afterthought.
Portuguese law, Portuguese language
Civil registration follows Portuguese practice through the Conservatória do Registo Civil, the registry office on whichever island the death occurred. The Ministério do Interior issues the export permit once the health ministry has confirmed there’s no infection risk. Every document comes out in Portuguese, and every one of them needs certified English translation before it means anything to a UK Coroner.
Getting home
There’s no direct UK connection from São Tomé. TAP Air Portugal’s regular Lisbon service is the standard route, with good onward UK options from there. TAAG Angola Airlines via Luanda offers a second path when timing or availability makes it the better choice. Cremation isn’t an option locally, so every case involves full body repatriation.
