Repatriation from Serbia to the UK

A guide to repatriating a British national from Serbia to the UK. Covers the Serbian tužilaštvo prosecutor system, Institute of Forensic Medicine Belgrade, Air Serbia routing, and 10–16 day timelines.

Serbia has seen significant growth in British tourism over the last decade. Belgrade has established itself as one of Europe’s most popular city-break destinations, particularly for its nightlife, food scene, and relatively low visitor costs. The Drina River region, Zlatibor Mountain, and Novi Sad’s EXIT music festival also attract British visitors. Serbia has a small but growing British expat population.

Serbia is not an EU member state, which affects documentation handling but not the fundamental repatriation process. The process is clearly defined and, in straightforward cases, resolves within 10 to 14 working days.

The tužilaštvo and forensic jurisdiction

All sudden, violent, or unexplained deaths in Serbia are reported to the tužilaštvo (prosecutor’s office) of the relevant higher court. The prosecutor decides whether a судско-медицинска обдукција (forensic post-mortem) is required. Forensic post-mortems in Belgrade are conducted at the Institut za sudsku medicinu — Medicinski fakultet (Institute of Forensic Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, University of Belgrade). This is Serbia’s premier forensic institution.

Regional forensic capacity exists in Novi Sad, Niš, and Kragujevac, aligned to the regional higher courts. For deaths outside Belgrade, the regional institute handles the case, though complex cases may be referred to Belgrade.

For natural deaths with clear medical certification, the prosecutor’s review can be completed in 2 to 4 working days without a post-mortem. For accidental or unexplained deaths, the full forensic examination takes 10 to 16 working days before clearance is given.

Documentation language

Serbian official documentation is in Serbian, written in both Cyrillic and Latin scripts (both are official). The Latin script versions are more accessible for international use. All documentation requires certified translation into English for UK purposes. Serbian-English certified translators are available in Belgrade; the British Embassy can provide guidance.

Non-EU administrative considerations

Serbia is not an EU member state. This means the administrative process does not benefit from any EU framework for death documentation. Serbia has bilateral and Council of Europe-level agreements covering body transport (Serbia is a party to the Strasbourg Agreement on Transfer of Corpses 1973). In practice, this means road repatriation to neighbouring EU countries is legally possible, with the usual laissez-passer documentation.

Routing

Nikola Tesla Airport Belgrade (BEG) has direct connections to UK airports. Air Serbia (formerly Jat Airways) operates direct Belgrade–London Heathrow services. Wizz Air and Ryanair also operate Belgrade–UK routes. The airport is well-equipped for international cargo. For deaths outside Belgrade, road transport to Belgrade for the export cargo booking is standard.

Timelines

Belgrade, natural death: 10 to 14 working days. Regional city (Novi Sad, Niš), natural death: 10 to 14 working days with transfer to Belgrade for cargo. Accidental death with full tužilaštvo investigation: 14 to 21 working days.
