Repatriation from South Korea to the UK

A guide to repatriating a British national from South Korea to the UK. Covers the National Forensic Service, Korean death registration, Incheon cargo routing, Korean Air and Asiana connections, and 10–18 day timelines.

South Korea receives a modest but consistent number of British visitors and has a small British business community, concentrated in Seoul. The country’s infrastructure is modern, English is widely spoken in professional and official contexts in Seoul, and the repatriation process, while not the fastest in Asia, is well-defined. The primary challenge for families is that all official documentation is in Korean.

Death registration and the National Forensic Service

Natural deaths in South Korea are certified by a physician and registered with the local dong office (administrative neighbourhood unit). The death certificate (사망진단서, samangjindanseo) is issued in Korean.

Where a death is sudden, unnatural, or the cause is unknown, the National Forensic Service (국립과학수사연구원, NFS) has jurisdiction over post-mortem examination. The NFS operates regional centres in Seoul, Busan, Gwangju, Daejeon, and other major cities. A post-mortem ordered by the district court prosecutor must be completed before the death certificate can be issued for export purposes.

The NFS is well-regarded by international standards. Turnaround times for straightforward cases are typically 5 to 10 working days.

Documentation in Korean

All documentation — death certificate, medical examiner’s report, post-mortem report — is in Korean. Certified translation into English is mandatory for UK purposes. Korean certified translators are available in Seoul, but arranging translation adds 2 to 4 working days.

Embalming and export

South Korean funeral companies in Seoul are experienced with international cases. Embalming to IATA standards is available. The export permit is issued by the local health authorities after the embalming certificate and death documentation are in order.

British Embassy

The British Embassy is in Seoul. Emergency number: +44 20 7008 5000.

Routing

Incheon International Airport (ICN), west of Seoul, is one of the best-equipped cargo hubs in Asia. Korean Air Cargo and Asiana Airlines both operate direct Incheon–London Heathrow services. British Airways also flies the route. Incheon’s cargo infrastructure is modern and experienced with human remains handling.

For deaths in Busan, the main southern port city, Gimhae International Airport (PUS) has connections but the majority of international cargo routes through Incheon.

Timelines

Seoul, natural death: 10 to 14 working days. Sudden death with NFS post-mortem: 14 to 18 working days. Busan or other regional city: 12 to 18 working days.
