For non-natural deaths, the Korps Politie Suriname has to confirm no criminal investigation is pending. The Bureau voor Openbare Gezondheidszorg, the public health authority, issues the export permit, typically within 3 to 7 working days once civil registration is complete. Every document is in Dutch and needs certified English translation.
When the interior is involved
Suriname’s interior, the Sipaliwini district and the upper river basins, is reachable mainly by small aircraft or river transport. Gold mining workers, both formal and informal, eco-tourism trekkers, and Maroon village communities account for most interior deaths. Recovery typically means light aircraft charter to interior airstrips like Stoelmanseiland, Anapaike, or Kwamalasamutu, or a river boat, before the body even reaches Paramaribo and the standard documentation process can begin.
Cremation and the route home
Suriname’s large Hindu community, descended from indentured workers brought from British India, makes cremation a genuinely common local choice, and one that can simplify things for a UK family.
