Sweden receives a steady flow of British visitors to Stockholm, Gothenburg, and the Swedish countryside. Business travel volumes are significant — IKEA, Ericsson, H&M, Volvo, and Spotify all draw British professionals. Stockholm is one of Scandinavia’s most popular city-break destinations among UK travellers.
Swedish repatriation is among the most efficient in Europe. The administrative system is modern, English is universally spoken, and the forensic infrastructure is well-resourced. Natural-cause cases in Stockholm can often be resolved in 7 to 10 working days.
The polismyndigheten and forensic process
All sudden, violent, or unexplained deaths in Sweden are reported to the polismyndigheten (Swedish Police Authority). The police determine whether a rättsmedicinsk undersökning (forensic investigation) is required, which in the relevant circumstances includes a forensic post-mortem.
Forensic post-mortems in Sweden are conducted by Rättsmedicinalverket (the National Board of Forensic Medicine), which operates regional departments in Stockholm, Gothenburg, Umeå, and Linköping. The Stockholm department, associated with Karolinska University Hospital, handles the largest volume of cases.
For natural deaths where a physician certifies the cause, the police process is administrative and typically resolves in 2 to 4 working days. For accidental or unexplained deaths, the Rättsmedicinalverket post-mortem is required before the death certificate can be used for export purposes.
Export documentation
The Swedish export permit for human remains is processed through the Länsstyrelsen (County Administrative Board) of the county where the death occurred. The permit requires the death certificate, embalming certificate, and confirmation that no judicial investigation is ongoing. Processing is typically 1 to 3 working days.
Documentation language
Swedish official documents are issued in Swedish. English translations are available from Swedish funeral directors handling international cases. Certified translation is required for UK import purposes, though the practical standard of English in Swedish official and professional environments means this is rarely a bottleneck.

Gothenburg Landvetter Airport (GOT) has direct UK connections and is the relevant exit point for deaths in the Gothenburg and western Sweden region. Malmö Airport (MMX) is smaller; cargo from Malmö area typically routes through Copenhagen (CPH).
