Repatriation from Switzerland to the UK

A guide to repatriating a British national from Switzerland to the UK. Covers cantonal forensic jurisdiction, Swiss Federal Health Office documentation, Zurich and Geneva cargo routing, and 7–14 day timelines.

Switzerland has a large British expatriate community and receives substantial numbers of British visitors, particularly in the Alps (Verbier, Zermatt, Davos, St. Moritz) and in cities with major international organisations — Geneva hosts the UN and Red Cross, Zurich is a global financial centre, and Basel has a large pharmaceutical cluster.

Switzerland is not an EU member state, which has procedural implications, but its repatriation process is well-established and generally efficient. The main complexity is cantonal variation: Switzerland’s 26 cantons each have their own legal and administrative systems.

Cantonal forensic jurisdiction

Death registration and forensic oversight in Switzerland are cantonal, not federal, matters. Each canton has its own Kantonsarzt (cantonal doctor) and forensic pathology infrastructure. Urban cantons — Zurich, Geneva, Basel-Stadt, Bern — have well-resourced forensic institutes with substantial international case experience. Rural and Alpine cantons have smaller forensic capacity and lower volumes of foreign national deaths.

For deaths in the Alps at resort altitude — heart attacks on ski slopes, altitude-related deaths — the body is typically transferred to the nearest urban centre for the post-mortem. The canton of Valais, which covers the Verbier and Zermatt resort areas, has specific procedures for ski resort deaths.

Linguistic variation

Switzerland has four official languages distributed by region. Most relevant to British repatriation:

German-speaking cantons (Zurich, Bern, Basel, Lucerne, St. Gallen — the majority): Documentation in German.

French-speaking cantons (Geneva, Vaud, Valais west, Neuchâtel — the Romandy): Documentation in French.

Italian-speaking canton (Ticino): Documentation in Italian.

All documentation requires certified translation for UK purposes. Swiss certified translators are readily available.

Federal Health Office role

While cantonal authorities handle the forensic and registration steps, the Bundesamt für Gesundheit (Federal Office of Public Health) issues a declaration permitting the export of human remains. This federal step is in addition to the cantonal documentation and requires the cantonal death certificate, a medical certificate, and the embalming certificate. Processing is typically 2 to 3 working days.

British Embassy

The British Embassy is in Berne. There is a British Consulate-General in Geneva. Emergency number: +44 20 7008 5000.

Routing

Zurich Airport (ZRH) is Switzerland’s main international hub with direct connections to UK airports. Geneva Airport (GVA) also has direct UK connections. Both airports handle human remains cargo regularly. British Airways, Swiss International Air Lines, and easyJet operate the principal routes. From smaller airports (Basel, Lugano, Sion), connection through Zurich or Geneva is standard.

Timelines

Zurich, Geneva, or Basel, natural death: 7 to 10 working days. Alpine resort death with transfer to urban forensic centre: 10 to 14 working days. Unnatural death with cantonal forensic investigation: 12 to 21 working days.
