Tuvalu is about as remote as repatriation cases get: nine low-lying coral atolls scattered across 756,000 square kilometres of Pacific Ocean, with a total population of around 11,000 people. Very few British nationals travel here, and when a death does happen, the logistics of the islands themselves shape almost everything about how the case runs.
Who to call

The atoll problem
Only Funafuti, the capital atoll, has an international airport. The remaining eight atolls rely entirely on the government vessel MV Nivaga III for inter-island transport, and its schedule is infrequent and can be disrupted by weather at any time. A death on one of the outer atolls can mean the body simply cannot move for days while transport is arranged. There’s no way around this: it’s a function of the country’s geography, not a documentation delay.
Mortuary capacity
Tuvalu’s mortuary and embalming capacity is very limited even by Pacific standards. Before committing to any timeline, a specialist firm needs to confirm what local facilities can actually do. This isn’t a step to skip: assuming standard capacity where none exists is how families end up with a plan that can’t be delivered.
Documentation
Death registration goes through the Tuvalu Births, Deaths and Marriages Registry. Anything non-natural brings in the Tuvalu Police Service for clearance. All of this happens in English, which removes one layer of complexity that many other Pacific cases don’t have.
Getting home
Every international route runs via Nadi or Suva in Fiji on Fiji Airways, connecting onward through Sydney, Singapore, or Hong Kong for the UK leg. There’s no cremation option in Tuvalu itself, so full body repatriation via Fiji is the only path for a family who wants cremation once the case reaches the UK.
