Uganda draws British visitors for gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, chimpanzee tracking in Kibale, wildlife in Queen Elizabeth and Murchison Falls National Parks, and the white-water rafting on the Nile at Jinja. It also has a substantial British expat community connected to development, NGO, and diplomatic work.
English is Uganda’s official language, which removes translation costs from the documentation process. The administrative structure centres on Kampala, and deaths in Kampala are processed through a system that is predictable if not fast. Deaths in national parks and remote areas add a logistical leg before the Kampala process can begin.
Uganda Police Force and forensic laboratory
All sudden, unnatural, or unexplained deaths involving foreign nationals in Uganda are investigated by the Uganda Police Force (UPF). The UPF attends the scene, secures jurisdiction, and requires a police post-mortem for all unnatural deaths. Post-mortems for international cases are conducted at the Uganda Police Forensic Laboratory in Kampala, or at Mulago National Referral Hospital for natural cause confirmations.
The UPF must formally close the investigation and issue clearance before the Ministry of Health export permit can be processed. For natural deaths with a clear medical history, the police review can proceed on documentary evidence. For accidents and unexplained deaths, a full police post-mortem is standard.
Bwindi and Mgahinga
Gorilla trekking deaths in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park are among the more logistically demanding Ugandan cases. Bwindi is in south-western Uganda, approximately 530 kilometres from Kampala by road — a journey of 8 to 10 hours on Ugandan roads. The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) must be notified of any death inside a national park; UWA clearance is required before the body can leave the protected area.
From the national park, the body must travel to Kampala. Light aircraft charters operate from Kisoro airstrip (the closest airstrip to Bwindi) to Entebbe; this is the fastest route, though it depends on charter availability. Road transfer is the fallback.
Murchison Falls and northern Uganda
Murchison Falls National Park is in north-western Uganda, approximately 300 kilometres from Kampala. Deaths here require UWA clearance and transfer to Kampala. Northern Uganda has historically had security concerns in areas near the South Sudan border; check current FCDO guidance before travel.
British High Commission
The British High Commission is in Kampala. Emergency number: +44 20 7008 5000.
Routing
Entebbe International Airport (EBB), near Kampala, handles all international cargo. There are no direct Uganda–UK flights. Standard routing is via Nairobi (Kenya Airways), Addis Ababa (Ethiopian Airlines), or Amsterdam (KLM). Emirates via Dubai is also available.
Timelines
Kampala, natural death: 14 to 21 days. National park death (Bwindi, Murchison) with UWA clearance and charter transfer: 18 to 28 days. Remote upcountry death with road transfer: 21 to 35 days.
