Zimbabwe has one feature that immediately distinguishes it from most southern and east African repatriation cases: English is the official language and all official documentation is issued in English. This removes the translation step that adds days or weeks to cases in Arabic, French, Portuguese, or Amharic-speaking countries.
The repatriation process follows the southern African pattern — Zimbabwe Republic Police investigation, State Pathologist post-mortem for unnatural deaths, Ministry of Health export permit — but the English documentation and the concentration of administrative capacity in Harare make straightforward cases relatively manageable.
Zimbabwe Republic Police and the State Pathologist
All sudden, unnatural, or unexplained deaths in Zimbabwe are investigated by the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP). The ZRP attends the scene, takes jurisdiction, and refers cases requiring forensic examination to the State Pathologist.
Zimbabwe has two State Pathologist offices: the main office in Harare (Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals complex) and a second office in Bulawayo. Deaths outside these two cities require transfer to one of these facilities. The Harare office handles the majority of cases, including those transferred from Victoria Falls, the Eastern Highlands, and other tourist areas.
The ZRP investigation must be formally closed and the State Pathologist must issue the post-mortem report before the Ministry of Health export permit can be processed.
Victoria Falls
Victoria Falls is Zimbabwe’s primary tourist destination, drawing British visitors throughout the year for the falls themselves, bungee jumping, white-water rafting, and the surrounding national parks. Deaths at Victoria Falls are processed initially through the local ZRP post at Victoria Falls town. Post-mortem is conducted at Victoria Falls Hospital, but complex forensic cases are transferred to Harare.
The transfer from Victoria Falls to Harare is approximately 880 kilometres by road or a short domestic flight. Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo International Airport in Bulawayo (BUQ) provides a closer option than Harare for cases in the south-west of the country.
Economic context
Zimbabwe’s economic instability has had practical effects on government services. USD is the dominant currency for transactions; Zimbabwean dollar pricing has been unreliable. Government offices, including the Ministry of Health and the State Pathologist’s office, can experience capacity constraints and delays unrelated to case complexity. A repatriation company with an active local agent in Harare is essential for managing these variables in real time.
British Embassy
The British Embassy is in Harare. Emergency number: +44 20 7008 5000. The Embassy has long experience with British national deaths in Zimbabwe given the historical relationship and the size of the British-Zimbabwean community.
Routing
Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport in Harare (HRE) is Zimbabwe’s main international airport. There are no direct Zimbabwe–UK flights. Standard routing is via Johannesburg (South African Airways, or connecting through OR Tambo), Nairobi (Kenya Airways), Addis Ababa (Ethiopian Airlines), or Dubai (Emirates). OR Tambo in Johannesburg (JNB) is the most reliable hub for cargo connections given South African Airways’ established human remains cargo procedures.
Timelines
Harare, natural death: 14 to 21 days. Victoria Falls or Bulawayo, with transfer: 18 to 28 days. Outside major cities, requiring ZRP and State Pathologist coordination: 21 to 35 days. Complex investigation with ZRP capacity constraints: 35+ days.
