Belize looks straightforward on paper: English documentation, a Commonwealth government, a resident British High Commission. It largely is. What catches families out is geography, both the country’s own and the route home.
No direct cargo route
There’s no direct air link between Belize and the UK. Every case routes through a US hub, most often Miami, occasionally Houston, before connecting onward. That means US Customs transit documentation sits alongside Belize’s own export permit, an extra requirement most Caribbean routings simply don’t carry.
Hurricane season is a real variable
Belize City is close to sea level and squarely in the Atlantic hurricane belt. Philip Goldson International Airport can and does close during storms between June and November. It won’t affect most cases, but a death that falls during a named storm can see real delay while the airport reopens and backlogged cargo clears.
Distance inside the country matters too
Belize City itself is manageable, generally 15 to 22 days for a straightforward natural death. Move away from it and the picture changes. The Cayo district, home to San Ignacio and the Caracol ruins, has sealed roads on the main route but unpaved, weather-dependent tracks further in. Toledo district in the south is more remote again, often reachable only by charter aircraft or a long road journey. And a death on one of the offshore cayes, Ambergris Caye or Caye Caulker among them, needs a water taxi transfer of 45 minutes to two hours before the process can even begin.
Where Belize genuinely saves money
English is Belize’s official language, and every document, from the death certificate to the export permit, is produced in English. That removes an entire cost category, certified translation, that applies almost everywhere else in the region.
