Cameroon is unusual among African repatriation destinations for a specific reason: it runs two administrative cultures within one country, a legacy of its colonial history that still shapes how a case moves today.
Francophone and Anglophone, side by side
Eight of Cameroon’s regions, including Yaounde in the Centre and Douala in the Littoral, follow French civil law tradition, with documentation issued in French requiring certified translation for UK use. The North West and South West regions are different. Administered under British mandate after the First World War, they retained English-language administration, which sounds like it should simplify things for a UK case. It does not, mainly because of what has happened there since 2017.
The Anglophone regions carry real security constraints
Significant disruption has affected the North West and South West regions since 2017, and the FCDO advises against all travel to both. A death originating in either region involves access constraints that have nothing to do with language and everything to do with the security situation on the ground. This needs to be understood early, not discovered partway through a case.
Court authorisation for anything non-natural
Deaths are registered at the local Centre d’Etat Civil. Where a death is not straightforwardly natural, the Judicial Police investigates under the Tribunal de Grande Instance, which must order any post-mortem and authorise the body’s release before anything further can happen. Complex post-mortems are referred to the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire in either Yaounde or Douala. The Ministere de la Sante Publique issues the export permit once these steps are complete.
No direct flight, ever
There is no direct service from Cameroon to the UK, full stop. Every case routes via Paris CDG with Air France or via Addis Ababa with Ethiopian Airlines. Neither route is unusual by regional standards, but it is worth setting expectations correctly from the outset rather than assuming a direct option exists somewhere.
