Chile sits in the middle of the complexity range for South American repatriations, more organised administratively than several of its neighbours, but with a geography that produces some of the most demanding remote-death scenarios British travellers encounter anywhere.
Patagonia and the Atacama add a transfer stage
Torres del Paine, the Carretera Austral, and Atacama expeditions draw thousands of British trekkers each year, and deaths at real distance from any urban administration centre follow a consistent pattern here. The Servicio Medico Legal has no forensic capacity in Patagonia itself, so a death there needs to reach Punta Arenas first, and often Santiago afterwards, before documentation can even start. That sequence alone can take several days, well before the formal process begins.
An efficient system, once it starts
Once a case reaches somewhere with the right facilities, Chile’s process is reasonably well organised. The Servicio Medico Legal is a well-established national forensic service, the Registro Civil issues the Certificado de Defuncion promptly, and the relevant regional Seremi de Salud, the ministry of health authority, issues the export permit once the police investigation, where applicable, has closed.
No Strasbourg Convention, no nonstop flight
Chile has not signed the Council of Europe Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses, which several of this site’s European corridors rely on for a shared legal framework. The Chilean domestic process carries the full weight here instead. On top of that, there is no nonstop UK flight from Chile. LATAM Airlines via Madrid, connecting with Iberia for the final leg to London, is the most reliable option; Avianca via Bogota is the usual alternative.
Cremation is available, in the right places
Santiago and Chile’s other major cities have working cremation facilities, which gives families a genuine choice alongside full body repatriation. It does not shortcut the Servicio Medico Legal’s involvement where the death was unnatural or unexplained.
