For most British families, the Dominican Republic means Punta Cana: a stretch of all-inclusive resorts that sees a steady flow of foreign visitors and, inevitably, a steady flow of deaths among them.
The resort bubble works in a family’s favour
Hotel staff in Punta Cana have usually dealt with a guest death before, and local funeral directors know the drill. The acta de defunción is issued in Spanish, as it is everywhere in the country, but the surrounding process moves with practised speed. Outside the resort corridor, in Santo Domingo, along the north coast near Cabarete, or in more rural parts of the island, that experience thins out. The further from Punta Cana, the less predictable things get.
No embassy on the ground
There’s no British Embassy in Santo Domingo. Consular services for the Dominican Republic run out of Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, with an Honorary Consul handling local matters. An Honorary Consul can help, but doesn’t carry the same formal authority as a full embassy team. Miami won’t shortcut anything
It’s a natural question. Miami is a short flight away, so why not route through there?
