An Honorary Consul, then a real embassy 350 kilometres away
There’s no resident British Embassy in El Salvador. The Honorary Consul in San Salvador can register a death, liaise with the family, and witness documents. But formal authority, the actual power to authorise repatriation, sits with the British Embassy in Guatemala City, 350 kilometres away. Timelines depend partly on that embassy’s workload and how quickly the two offices communicate, which is exactly where an established relationship on the UK side makes a measurable difference.
The IML and when it gets involved
Any death classed as suspicious, violent, or unexplained goes to the Instituto de Medicina Legal, operating under the Fiscalia General de la Republica, the attorney general’s office. That could include something as ordinary-sounding as a tourist drowning, if foul play can’t immediately be ruled out. The IML in San Salvador is efficient by regional standards, though busy periods can add five to ten days before its forensic release certificate is issued.
Where the risk actually sits now
Government security crackdowns since 2022 have transformed El Salvador’s homicide rate, and tourism, surf beaches like El Zonte, coffee country, colonial Suchitoto, is genuinely growing. Even so, road traffic accidents on the CA-1 Pan-American Highway remain the most consistent cause of British deaths, alongside water incidents at Pacific surf spots where rip currents run strong.
No direct flight
Every repatriation route from El Salvador goes through a US hub first, Miami, Houston, or Dallas/Fort Worth, before the leg to the UK.
