Equatorial Guinea is the only Spanish-speaking country in sub-Saharan Africa, and its geography creates a logistics problem before any paperwork even starts.
An island and a mainland enclave
The country splits into Bioko Island, home to the capital Malabo, and Rio Muni, a mainland strip wedged between Cameroon and Gabon. Every international repatriation flight leaves from Malabo. A death on Bioko is comparatively straightforward. A death in Rio Muni means an overland or internal flight transfer to Malabo first, across road infrastructure that’s limited in places, and that single transfer is usually what separates a fourteen-day case from a forty-two-day one.
Spanish paperwork, a non-resident High Commission
Death certification runs through the Registro Civil, and the Ministerio del Interior y Corporaciones Locales issues the export permit once health documentation is complete. All of it is in Spanish, and none of it is usable in the UK without certified translation. There’s no British High Commission in the country itself; consular support is non-resident, based in Yaoundé, Cameroon.
Governance adds its own unpredictability
President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo has led the country since a coup in 1979, one of the longest-serving governments anywhere. Ministry processing times can vary in ways that aren’t always easy to predict from outside, which is exactly why current, working relationships with in-country contacts matter more here than in most corridors on this site.
Getting home
Air France runs a direct Malabo to Paris service, the most dependable repatriation route to the UK. Ethiopian Airlines via Addis Ababa is the alternative. Cremation isn’t available anywhere in the country, so full body repatriation is the only option regardless of the family’s wishes.
