When Someone Dies in Andorra: The First Steps
Call the FCDO on 020 7008 5000 (24 hours) or contact the British Embassy Madrid (+34 91 714 6300). The British Embassy in Madrid handles consular matters for Andorra on a non-resident basis.
Andorra is a low-complexity destination and there are no significant security concerns. The main practical consideration is that there is no airport in Andorra — road transfer to Barcelona or Toulouse is part of every repatriation.
The Legal Process
Death registration is handled by the parish Comú (local authority) for the parish where death occurred. The Comú issues the official death certificate in Catalan. Where death was not from natural causes, the Cos de Policia d’Andorra investigates and must authorise release of the body.
Certified English translation is required for all Catalan documents.
Document Checklist
| Document | Issued By | Notes |
|---|---|---|

| Police clearance | Cos de Policia d’Andorra (non-natural deaths) | |
| Embalming certificate | Licensed local mortuary | |

| Export authorisation | Relevant authority | |
| Consular death registration | British Embassy, Madrid | Non-resident |
| Coroner permission (UK) | HM Coroner | Required in some circumstances |
Road Transfer to Barcelona or Toulouse
There is no airport in Andorra. The repatriation requires a road transfer to either Barcelona El Prat (BCN) (approx. 3 hours) or Toulouse-Blagnac (TLS) (approx. 3 hours). A specialist repatriation firm will arrange this transfer. Barcelona offers more frequent direct UK connections.
Cremation Options
If cremation is required, the body can be transferred to Spain or France before cremation, then the ashes repatriated to the UK. No cremation facilities exist in Andorra itself.
Timelines typically run 5–14 days — one of the shorter timelines in continental Europe.
