When Someone Dies in Belize
Belize has a resident British High Commission in Belmopan, English as the official language, and a Commonwealth legal system. These are meaningful practical advantages. The complications are geography — the road network outside the main highway corridor is poor — and the US transit routing for cargo, which requires additional documentation compared to Caribbean island routings.
Step 1: Immediate Notifications
- British High Commission Belmopan — first official contact.
- FCDO Emergency Travel Line: 020 7008 5000 (available 24 hours).
- Appoint a specialist UK repatriation company.
The High Commission in Belmopan is approximately 80 km west of Belize City on the Western Highway. In emergency situations involving Belize City, response time is manageable.
Step 2: Location in Belize
Belize has distinct tourist zones with different transfer implications.
Belize City and environs: Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH) is in Belize City and is the national forensic centre. Deaths here are the most straightforward to process.
Ambergris Caye / Caye Caulker: Water taxi from Belize City (45 minutes to 2 hours depending on destination). Body transfer to KHMH by boat or small aircraft.
Cayo district (San Ignacio, Caracol ruins, Mountain Pine Ridge): The Western Highway to San Ignacio is sealed (3 hours from Belize City). Roads into Mountain Pine Ridge and towards Caracol are unpaved, particularly difficult in wet season (June to November).
Placencia and the southern cayes: Road from Belize City is approximately 3.5 hours (sealed to a point, then deteriorates). Alternatively, small aircraft to Placencia Airstrip.
Toledo district (Punta Gorda, jungle lodges): Most remote district. Road from Belize City is 5 to 6 hours. Small aircraft via Punta Gorda Airstrip.
Step 3: The Great Blue Hole and Reef Diving Deaths
The Great Blue Hole (UNESCO World Heritage Site) is an underwater sinkhole 300 metres in diameter at 35 to 40 metres depth. It attracts liveaboard diving trips from Belize City. Deaths at the Blue Hole or at any reef site require specialist forensic examination at KHMH. KHMH has a hyperbaric facility, though its availability should be confirmed with the repatriation company.
Decompression illness requiring treatment should trigger immediate evacuation from the dive site to KHMH before it becomes a repatriation case.
Step 4: KHMH and the Forensic Process
Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital is the national referral hospital and the location for forensic post-mortems. The coroner process for unnatural deaths is mandatory. Documentation is in English.
Step 5: Documentation
- Death certificate from the Central Statistical Office (via the Vital Statistics Unit).
- Police report.
- Coroner’s release order (unnatural deaths).
- Post-mortem report from KHMH.
- Ministry of Health export permit.
- Embalming to IATA standards with certificate.
All documentation is in English.
Step 6: US Hub Routing
All Belize-to-UK cargo transits through US airports. American Airlines (Miami), United Airlines (Houston), and Delta (Atlanta) are the primary routes. US Customs transit documentation is required — your specialist repatriation company will handle this, but it is a real step that adds time compared to Caribbean routing via Barbados or Antigua.
Philip Goldson International Airport (BZE) is the only international airport in Belize.
Hurricane Season
Belize sits in the active hurricane belt. Hurricane Hattie (1961) destroyed most of Belize City, which is why the capital was relocated to Belmopan. During hurricane season (June to November), monitor FCDO travel advisories. A major storm will close Philip Goldson Airport and suspend all cargo operations.
Further Information
First things first
What to do in the first 24 hours
The immediate period after a death abroad is disorienting. Here are the steps in the order they normally need to happen.
Contact local emergency services
Contact the British Embassy or consulate
FCDO 24hr: +44 (0)20 7008 5000
Appoint a local funeral director
A local funeral director in Belize will take care of the body, arrange embalming, obtain the necessary documents, and coordinate with airlines. The embassy can recommend accredited directors. You can also contact a specialist UK repatriation company, who will coordinate with a local partner on your behalf.
Contact your travel insurer
If your loved one had travel insurance with repatriation cover, contact the insurer immediately. They will often have an emergency assistance line and may appoint their own funeral director. They may cover the full cost of repatriation, which can be .
Gather the required documents
Repatriation from Belize requires specific paperwork before a body can be transported. Your local funeral director will handle most of this.
What to expect
How long does it take?
Factors that can extend the timeline
- No direct UK flights — all cargo routing via US hubs (Miami, Houston, Dallas) with US Customs transit documentation required
- Deaths in remote Cayo district, Toledo, or offshore cayes require road transfer or small aircraft to Belize City; road conditions in southern and western Belize are poor
- Hurricane season June to November: Category 4 and 5 storms do periodically affect Belize; Belize City is vulnerable to storm surge
- Diving deaths at the Great Blue Hole, Turneffe Atoll, or Lighthouse Reef require specialist forensic examination; KHMH has limited hyperbaric capacity
