When Someone Dies in Saint Lucia

Saint Lucia has an Honorary British Consul in Castries but no resident diplomatic post. The British High Commission in Bridgetown, Barbados, has formal accreditation and coordinates on complex cases. For UK families, the key practical facts are: English documentation throughout, Victoria Hospital in Castries handles forensics, and cargo routes via Barbados to London.

Step 1: Immediate Notifications

  1. Honorary British Consul Castries — first consular contact.
  2. FCDO Emergency Travel Line: 020 7008 5000 (available 24 hours).
  3. British High Commission Bridgetown (Barbados) — formal diplomatic contact.
  4. Appoint a specialist UK repatriation company.

Step 2: Location on the Island

Saint Lucia is approximately 40 km long. The main concentrations of British tourists are:

  • Rodney Bay and Gros Islet (northern resort area): Castries is 15 km south. Road transfer to Victoria Hospital is 20 to 30 minutes.
  • Soufriere and the Pitons (southern resort area, UNESCO World Heritage Site): the winding road north to Castries takes approximately 2 hours.
  • Marigot Bay: approximately 30 minutes from Castries.

Deaths in the southern part of the island should be reported to the nearest police station immediately. The body will be taken to Victoria Hospital for post-mortem.

Step 3: La Soufriere Volcanic Park

The drive-in sulphur springs (La Soufriere) and the sulphur springs at Soufriere are among Saint Lucia’s most-visited attractions. Deaths in volcanic park areas, though rare, involve the Department of Sustainable Development in addition to police. Toxic gas inhalation is the relevant risk.

Step 4: Victoria Hospital

Victoria Hospital in Castries is the main national hospital. All forensic post-mortems for unnatural deaths take place here. The capacity is limited — one consulting pathologist is typical — which means waiting times can extend for complex cases. The coroner process is mandatory for all unnatural deaths.

Step 5: Documentation

  1. Death certificate from the Civil Registry, Castries.
  2. Police report.
  3. Coroner’s release order (for unnatural deaths).
  4. Post-mortem report from Victoria Hospital.
  5. Ministry of Health export permit.
  6. Embalming to IATA standards with certificate.

All documentation is in English.

Step 6: Cargo Routing

Cargo departs from Hewanorra International Airport (UVF) in the south of the island. It transits to Grantley Adams International Airport (BGI) in Barbados, where it connects with British Airways or Virgin Atlantic direct services to London Gatwick. Some cargo uses Antigua as an alternative transit point.

George F. L. Charles Airport (SLU) near Castries is not used for cargo repatriation — it handles regional inter-island flights only and has limited runway capacity.
