When Someone Dies in Vanuatu
There is no British Embassy in Vanuatu. This is the most important fact to understand before anything else. The Australian High Commission in Port Vila handles consular emergencies for British nationals under the UK-Australia Consular Sharing Agreement. The FCDO in London must also be notified immediately.
Vanuatu repatriations require specialist coordination. The archipelago covers 1,300 km, forensic infrastructure is limited, and outer island transport is vulnerable to cyclone disruption. Managing this from the UK without a specialist repatriation service is not realistic.
Step 1: Immediate Notifications
- Australian High Commission Port Vila — first consular contact in-country.
- FCDO Emergency Travel Line in London: 020 7008 5000 (available 24 hours).
- Appoint a specialist UK repatriation company.
Note: The British High Commission Port Moresby has formal diplomatic accreditation to Vanuatu. Notify the FCDO; they will manage coordination with Port Moresby as needed.
Step 2: Outer Island Deaths
Vanuatu has 80 islands spread over 1,300 km of the South Pacific. Deaths outside Port Vila require inter-island transfer before documentation can begin. Key locations:
- Tanna (Mount Yasur): inter-island charter flights, around 2 hours to Port Vila.
- Malekula: charter or scheduled aircraft, 1 to 3 hours to Port Vila.
- Ambrym (another active volcano island): charter aircraft required.
- Espiritu Santo (outer areas): Luganville is reachable but remote Santo areas require small aircraft.
Cyclone season runs November to April. Tropical cyclones disrupt inter-island aircraft and boat services. Deaths during cyclone season on outer islands may face multi-day transfer delays.
Step 3: Vila Central Hospital
Vila Central Hospital in Port Vila handles post-mortem examinations. Forensic pathology capacity is limited. For complex deaths — unclear cause, significant trauma, possible criminal involvement — the Vanuatu Department of Health may request specialist forensic assistance from Australia. This adds substantially to the timeline: arranging and executing specialist forensic assistance from Australia typically adds 10 to 20 days.
Step 4: Mount Yasur Deaths
Mount Yasur on Tanna is one of the world’s most accessible active volcanoes. Tourists visit the crater rim. Deaths from proximity to volcanic activity, toxic gas exposure, or falls near the crater involve additional investigation by Vanuatu police and the Australian High Commission. The body must be transferred from Tanna to Port Vila (inter-island charter) before examination.
Step 5: Documentation
- Death certificate from the Vanuatu Civil Registry.
- Police investigation closure.
- Post-mortem report from Vila Central Hospital.
- Ministry of Health export permit.
- Embalming to IATA standards with certificate.
Vanuatu’s official languages are English, French, and Bislama. Documentation is available in English. Some outer island communities are primarily French-speaking — the Australian High Commission can assist with translation requirements.
Step 6: Cargo Routing
All cargo connections operate via Brisbane or Sydney. There are no direct Vanuatu-UK cargo connections. Bauerfield International Airport (VLI) in Port Vila is the main departure point. Transit from Port Vila to London Heathrow via Brisbane is typically 30 to 40 hours.
Cremation
Cremation is not available in Vanuatu. Embalmed body repatriation is the only option for returning a deceased person to the UK.
Further Information
First things first
What to do in the first 24 hours
The immediate period after a death abroad is disorienting. Here are the steps in the order they normally need to happen.
Contact local emergency services
Contact the British Embassy or consulate
FCDO 24hr: +44 (0)20 7008 5000
Appoint a local funeral director
A local funeral director in Vanuatu will take care of the body, arrange embalming, obtain the necessary documents, and coordinate with airlines. The embassy can recommend accredited directors. You can also contact a specialist UK repatriation company, who will coordinate with a local partner on your behalf.
Contact your travel insurer
If your loved one had travel insurance with repatriation cover, contact the insurer immediately. They will often have an emergency assistance line and may appoint their own funeral director. They may cover the full cost of repatriation, which can be .
Gather the required documents
Repatriation from Vanuatu requires specific paperwork before a body can be transported. Your local funeral director will handle most of this.

Factors that can extend the timeline
- Vanuatu is an 80-island archipelago; deaths outside Port Vila (Efate) or Luganville (Santo) require inter-island transfer before documentation begins
- No Strasbourg Convention; full bilateral processing required
- Limited forensic capacity at Vila Central Hospital; complex deaths may require Australian specialist forensic assistance
- No resident British diplomatic presence; Australian High Commission Port Vila provides consular assistance under UK-Australia sharing arrangement
- No direct UK flights; all routing via Brisbane or Sydney with onward connection to London
- Cyclone season (November to April) can delay inter-island transport and documentation
