City repatriation guide
Repatriation from Copenhagen, Denmark
Specific guidance for arranging repatriation from Copenhagen. Local documentation contacts, airport cargo routes, and the typical process for cases originating in this area.
Denmark’s death investigation and registration system is orderly and well-documented. Repatriation from Copenhagen to the UK is among the simpler processes in Europe — the proximity to the UK, direct air connections, and Denmark’s English-language administrative capacity all work in the family’s favour. The legal framework is Danish, and certified translations are required, but Danish authorities are experienced in handling international transport of human remains.
What Danish law requires
The Danish lov om ligsyn (Act on Post-mortem Examination) governs the investigation of deaths where the cause is not immediately certifiable. When a death is sudden, violent, unexplained, or occurs outside a medical setting, a judicial post-mortem examination (retslægelig obduktion) can be ordered by the police.
The Copenhagen Police (Københavns Politi) attend unexpected deaths. If the attending physician can certify the cause, the case proceeds without judicial involvement. If not, the police refer the case for a retslægelig obduktion, conducted at the Department of Forensic Medicine at the University of Copenhagen (Retsmedicinsk Institut, Frederiksberg Hospital area).
The documentation chain
1. Dødsattest (Death certificate). Issued by the treating physician or the forensic medical officer following examination.
2. Begravelses- og ligbrændingstilladelse (Burial and cremation permit). Issued by the local municipality (Borgerservice, Copenhagen Municipality) after the death certificate is registered.
3. Tilladelse til transport af lig til udlandet (Permit to transport remains abroad). Issued by the regional health authority (Styrelsen for Patientsikkerhed — Danish Patient Safety Authority). The licensed Danish funeral director applies on behalf of the family.
4. Embalming certificate. Required for air transport.
5. Freedom from infection certificate.
6. IATA cargo documentation.

Airport and cargo routing
Copenhagen Airport Kastrup (CPH) has direct LHR services via British Airways, SAS (Scandinavian Airlines), and easyJet. The CPH cargo terminal handles human remains. With direct UK connections and a short flight time (approximately 2 hours), Copenhagen is one of the most logistics-friendly repatriation origins in Northern Europe.
Road repatriation via Øresund Bridge to Sweden, then Malmö-to-Calais by road, is a technically viable but rarely used alternative.
British consular contacts
The British Embassy Copenhagen is at Kastelsvej 36-40, 2100 Copenhagen Ø. FCDO 24-hour emergency line: +44 (0)20 7008 5000.
Timeline from Copenhagen
- Natural death with certifiable cause: 5 to 10 days
- Retslægelig obduktion: 14 to 21 days
- Extended police investigation: 4 to 6 weeks
Key local considerations
Copenhagen attracts British tourists for city breaks, business travel, and as a cruise stop. Deaths among British visitors are relatively infrequent compared to high-volume holiday destinations, but the city’s popularity has grown significantly and the British Embassy Copenhagen handles repatriation cases each year.
The harbour and canal areas in Copenhagen carry a drowning risk, particularly in summer when outdoor socialising near water is common. These deaths trigger the automatic police referral under lov om ligsyn.
