City repatriation guide
Repatriation from Yogyakarta, Indonesia
Specific guidance for arranging repatriation from Yogyakarta. Local documentation contacts, airport cargo routes, and the typical process for cases originating in this area.
Yogyakarta (locally known as Jogja) is the capital of the Special Region of Yogyakarta (Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta, DIY), a province with a unique status within the Republic of Indonesia. The Sultan of Yogyakarta (currently Sultan Hamengkubuwono X) serves simultaneously as the Provincial Governor — an arrangement guaranteed by the Special Region Act 2012. This is not merely ceremonial: the sultanate’s influence over local institutions, land law, and cultural affairs is genuine and shapes the administrative environment.
British visitors come to Yogyakarta for Borobudur (Candi Borobudur, UNESCO World Heritage, 42km north-west of the city — the world’s largest Buddhist temple); Prambanan (Candi Prambanan, UNESCO World Heritage, Hindu temple complex 17km east of the city); the Kraton (Sultan’s Palace); and guided ascents of Mount Merapi (Gunung Merapi, 2,930m — one of the world’s most active volcanoes, 25km north of the city). Deaths associated with Merapi activity or Merapi summit ascents are a specific category requiring special handling.
Consular coverage
The British Embassy Jakarta (Jalan Patra Kuningan Raya Blok L5-6, Jakarta 12950) covers all of Indonesia including the Special Region of Yogyakarta. There is no British consular presence in Yogyakarta.

What Indonesian law requires
KUHAP (Kitab Undang-Undang Hukum Acara Pidana, Law No.8/1981): The Indonesian Code of Criminal Procedure governs sudden, unnatural, or unexplained deaths. Sudden deaths are reported to Polresta Yogyakarta (Kepolisian Resor Kota Yogyakarta) or, for deaths in the surrounding regencies, the relevant Polres. The Kejaksaan Tinggi DIY (District Prosecutor) may order a forensic post-mortem.
Death registration: Deaths are registered with the Dinas Kependudukan dan Pencatatan Sipil (Disdukcapil) Kota Yogyakarta. The Akta Kematian (death certificate) is issued here.
RSUP Dr. Sardjito (Rumah Sakit Umum Pusat, Jl. Kesehatan No.1, Yogyakarta): The national referral hospital for the DIY and Central Java region. The forensic medicine department (Bagian Kedokteran Forensik) at Sardjito conducts post-mortems for cases referred by the police and prosecutor. Complex cases that exceed local forensic capacity are referred to RSUPN Dr. Cipto Mangunkusumo in Jakarta.
International transport permit: Dinas Kesehatan Provinsi DIY (Provincial Health Office) issues the international transport permit. The British Embassy Jakarta must be notified and will issue documentation for UK purposes.
Mount Merapi deaths: Deaths on or near Merapi are coordinated through Badan Penanggulangan Bencana Daerah (BPBD DIY, Regional Disaster Management Agency) and Balai Penyelidikan dan Pengembangan Teknologi Kebencanaan Geologi (BPPTKG, the volcanology monitoring centre). Body recovery from active volcanic zones requires BPBD authorisation and may be suspended during elevated activity. The additional complexity adds significantly to timelines.

Medical coverage
RSUP Dr. Sardjito (see above) is the primary hospital for serious cases. RS PKU Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (Jl. KH Ahmad Dahlan No.20) and RS Bethesda (Jl. Jend. Sudirman No.70) serve as the main private hospitals used by insured foreign visitors. Basic medical facilities exist near Borobudur and Prambanan; serious trauma requires transfer to Yogyakarta city hospitals.
The documentation chain
1. Akta Kematian from Disdukcapil Kota Yogyakarta. 2. Polresta Yogyakarta investigation report (in sudden/unnatural deaths). 3. RSUP Dr. Sardjito forensic post-mortem (if ordered by prosecutor). 4. Kejaksaan release of the body. 5. Dinas Kesehatan Provinsi DIY international transport permit. 6. British Embassy Jakarta documentation. 7. Embalming certificate. 8. IATA cargo documentation — YIA (Yogyakarta International Airport) or JOG (Adisutjipto Airport) to LHR via Singapore (SIN) or Kuala Lumpur (KUL).
Yogyakarta International Airport (YIA, Kulonprogo, opened 2020, 45km west of the city) is the main international facility. It handles direct services to Singapore (SIN) and Kuala Lumpur (KUL). UK cargo routes YIA-SIN-LHR or YIA-KUL-LHR. Adisutjipto Airport (JOG, close to the city) handles domestic connections.
