Repatriation from Amalfi, Italy

There is no airport on the Amalfi Coast. Deaths in Amalfi, Positano, Ravello, and Praiano are all administered through local municipalities but depart via Naples International Airport (NAP), approximately 60 to 90 minutes north by road or a combination of ferry and road. The documentation requirements follow Italian national law, applied through the Campania regional administration.

The Italian documentation chain for Amalfi Coast deaths

1. Certificato di morte from the local Ufficiale di Stato Civile. The death is registered at the relevant comune. Amalfi, Positano, and Praiano are small comuni — their Uffici Anagrafe (registry offices) have limited staffing and may take 7 to 12 working days to issue the certified death certificate. Ravello is even smaller. Do not assume the Amalfi Coast’s tourist prominence translates to administrative efficiency.

2. Procura della Repubblica Napoli or Salerno. Sudden, unexplained, or traumatic deaths are referred to the relevant Procura. Amalfi and the Salerno-side towns (Praiano, Positano) fall under the Salerno Procura. Deaths in the Naples province (northern Amalfi Coast) fall under the Naples Procura. An autopsia giudiziaria may be ordered. The forensic work is conducted at the nearest forensic pathology department (IML — Istituto di Medicina Legale) in Naples or Salerno.

3. Nulla Osta Funerario Estero. Issued by the Prefettura di Salerno (for most Amalfi Coast deaths) or Prefettura di Napoli. Processing: 3 to 7 working days after the comune death certificate is complete.

4. Embalming certificate and zinc-lined coffin documentation. Prepared by the approved Campania funeral director.

5. Freedom from infection certificate.

Road access and logistics

The Amalfi Coast road (SS163) is notoriously narrow and heavily trafficked in summer. Vehicle access to towns like Positano is restricted for large vehicles. Funeral directors operating in this area use specialist small vehicles for initial transfer to a broader road network. This is a known logistical consideration — not an obstacle, but a fact that adds time compared to deaths in accessible city locations.

Naples International Airport (NAP) has direct UK services operated by British Airways (NAP-LHR) and easyJet. For cargo repatriation, British Airways is the operative carrier. Some cases route via Rome Fiumicino (FCO, 3 hours north by road) for greater cargo flexibility.

• Physician-certified natural death: 14 to 21 days (longer than major cities due to small comune processing)
• Procura investigation: 3 to 6 weeks
• Positano or remote village death with access restrictions: add 1 to 3 days for initial transfer

Key local considerations

The Amalfi Coast attracts affluent British visitors, honeymooners, and older travellers. Deaths among older tourists with cardiac conditions are among the most common repatriation cases. Road accident deaths on the cliff-edge coastal road involve the Procura without exception.

August in Campania: Ferragosto closures apply equally here. Allow an additional 5 to 7 working days for deaths occurring 10 to 20 August.
