City repatriation guide
Repatriation from Sardinia, Italy
Specific guidance for arranging repatriation from Sardinia. Local documentation contacts, airport cargo routes, and the typical process for cases originating in this area.
Sardinia operates under the same Italian national repatriation documentation requirements as the mainland, but the island’s geographic separation from the Italian peninsula adds a logistical dimension not present in Roman or Milanese cases. All documentation must be complete before the body can leave the island — by air or by ferry.
The Italian documentation chain for Sardinia
1. Certificato di morte from the local Ufficiale di Stato Civile. The death is registered at the relevant Sardinian comune. Major towns (Cagliari, Sassari, Olbia) process certificates in 3 to 5 working days. Smaller comuni in the Barbagia interior, Ogliastra, or the Sulcis-Iglesiente can take 7 to 12 working days.
2. Procura della Repubblica. Sudden, unexplained, or violent deaths are referred to the relevant Sardinian Procura — Cagliari for the south, Sassari for the north. Autopsia giudiziaria may be ordered, conducted at the forensic medicine institute (IML) at Cagliari or Sassari University Hospital. Timeline: 2 to 4 weeks additional if ordered.
3. Nulla Osta Funerario Estero. The Prefettura di Cagliari (south/centre) or Prefettura di Sassari (north) issues this permit. Processing: 3 to 7 working days after the death certificate is complete.
4. Embalming certificate and zinc-lined coffin. Prepared by the approved Sardinian funeral director.
5. Freedom from infection certificate.

Airport and cargo options
Sardinia has three international airports:
- Cagliari Elmas Airport (CAG): Main hub for south Sardinia. British Airways, Ryanair, and easyJet operate UK routes in summer. For cargo: BA direct to LHR or connecting via Rome Fiumicino (FCO).
- Olbia Costa Smeralda Airport (OLB): Serves north Sardinia and the Costa Smeralda. UK summer charters and scheduled services. Cargo routes via Rome or Milan.
- Alghero-Fertilia Airport (AHO): Serves the north-west. Smaller UK connectivity — most cargo routes via Cagliari or Rome.
The approved Sardinian funeral director selects the most practical airport based on the death location and cargo availability.
British consular contacts
The British Consulate General in Rome covers Sardinia. For Cagliari-area deaths, the British Consulate in Naples may also advise. British Embassy Rome (Via XX Settembre 80a) is the primary contact. FCDO 24-hour emergency line: +44 (0)20 7008 5000.
Timeline from Sardinia
- Physician-certified natural death: 10 to 21 days
- Procura case: 3 to 6 weeks
- Remote Barbagia or Ogliastra death: add 3 to 7 days for initial transfer to main city
Key local considerations
The Costa Smeralda in the north attracts wealthy British visitors. The Orosei Gulf coast and Capo Carbonara in the south are popular with UK divers and sailors. Diving accidents and sailing incidents are subject to Procura investigation.
Interior Sardinia — the Barbagia, Gennargentu mountains — is genuinely remote. Deaths in this region require road transfer to either Cagliari or Sassari before formal documentation can begin. Some areas have limited mobile phone coverage, which affects emergency notification times.
Ferragosto (mid-August) closures apply to all Sardinian comuni and Prefettura offices. Allow an additional 5 to 7 working days for deaths between 10 and 20 August.
