City repatriation guide
Repatriation from Playa del Carmen, Mexico
Specific guidance for arranging repatriation from Playa del Carmen. Local documentation contacts, airport cargo routes, and the typical process for cases originating in this area.
Playa del Carmen is the main town of the Riviera Maya, on the Caribbean coast of the state of Quintana Roo. It sits 68km south of Cancún and 13km north of the Tulum archaeological site. It has grown from a small ferry port (the ferry to Cozumel departs from the Playa pier) into one of Mexico’s most popular resort destinations, attracting British visitors for beach holidays, cenote diving, Mayan ruin excursions, and nightlife. The Fifth Avenue (Quinta Avenida) tourist strip is one of Mexico’s busiest tourist promenades.
Deaths in Playa del Carmen fall under the state of Quintana Roo, not the state of Yucatán (which covers Mérida and the Chichén Itzá area). The Fiscalía General del Estado de Quintana Roo, based in Chetumal (the state capital, 332km south), has jurisdiction over criminal and forensic matters for the Riviera Maya. In practice, the Fiscalía maintains a Cancún-area office that handles the majority of tourist-area cases.
Consular coverage
The British Consulate General Cancún (Blvd. Kukulcán, Km 8.5, Plaza Kukulcán, Cancún, Quintana Roo) covers the Quintana Roo state, including Playa del Carmen, Tulum, and the Riviera Maya. For urgent cases, the FCDO 24-hour line is the first contact.
British Consulate General Cancún: +52 998 881 0100. FCDO 24-hour emergency line: +44 (0)20 7008 5000.
What Quintana Roo law requires
Código Civil del Estado de Quintana Roo and the Ley del Registro Civil de Quintana Roo: Deaths must be registered with the Registro Civil in the municipality where the death occurred. For Playa del Carmen, the relevant Registro Civil is in the Municipio de Solidaridad (which covers Playa del Carmen). The Acta de Defunción is the primary document.
Fiscalía General del Estado de Quintana Roo: Sudden, violent, or unexplained deaths are investigated by the Ministerio Público. The SEMEFO (Servicio Médico Forense) of Quintana Roo is the forensic pathology facility. SEMEFO Cancún covers most Riviera Maya cases; the state SEMEFO is in Chetumal.
Secretaría de Salud de Quintana Roo: Issues the health permit for international transport of human remains under the General Health Law (Ley General de Salud).

Medical coverage
Hospital Galenia (Av. Tulum 260, Cancún) is the main private hospital serving the Cancún-Playa del Carmen corridor and is the most commonly used facility for insured British and foreign visitors. Hospital Hospiten Riviera Maya (Av. Constituyentes, Playa del Carmen) is closer to Playa. Médica Sur (various locations) and IMSS hospitals cover uninsured and emergency cases. For trauma and intensive care, Cancún facilities are better-equipped than Playa del Carmen.
The documentation chain
