Repatriation from Dénia, Spain
Specific guidance for arranging repatriation from Dénia. Local documentation contacts, airport cargo routes, and the typical process for cases originating in this area.
The Costa Blanca North, stretching from Dénia and Jávea south through Calpe and Altea, has one of the highest concentrations of long-stay British residents in Europe. Unlike the coastal resort towns further south, this strip is home to families who have lived in Spain for decades. Many hold Spanish residency. Some are registered on the padrón municipal. A number have wills registered with Spanish notaries, Spanish bank accounts, and Spanish private health insurance. When a British national dies here, the repatriation process reflects that complexity.
This page covers Dénia, Jávea (Xàbia), Calpe, Altea, and the surrounding Comarca Marina Alta.
The British Consulate General and what it covers
The British Consulate General in Alicante (Calle Alberola Romero 1, Alicante) covers all of the Valencia Community, including Marina Alta. The Consulate can register the death in UK consular records, advise on Spanish documentation requirements, and provide a list of local funeral directors with experience in repatriation cases.
The Consulate cannot repatriate the body, pay any costs, or instruct the Registro Civil or Spanish courts.

What Spanish law requires
Registro Civil: All deaths in Spain are registered at the local Registro Civil. For Dénia and Jávea, this is the Registro Civil in Dénia (Juzgado de Primera Instancia e Instrucción, Calle Patricio Ferrándiz). The death certificate (certificado de defunción) is issued from here.
Forense and Juzgado: Sudden, violent, or unexplained deaths are referred to the Médico Forense through the local Juzgado de Instrucción. The forensic doctor determines whether a post-mortem (autopsia judicial) is needed. For long-stay residents who die in hospital under medical supervision, cause of death is usually certified directly by the attending physician.
Licencia de enterramiento or traslado internacional: Before the body leaves Spain, a licence for international transfer (licencia de traslado de cadáver al extranjero) is required from the competent health authority, in this case the Conselleria de Sanitat Universal i Salut Pública de la Comunitat Valenciana.
Hospital de Dénia and private health cover
Hospital de Dénia (Partida Beniadlà s/n, Dénia) is the principal public hospital serving Marina Alta. Long-stay British residents are frequently registered with both Spanish Social Security (if they have worked in Spain or transferred an S1 form) and private health insurance. Deaths in the private Hospital IMED Levante (Dénia and Benidorm) also occur. When a British resident dies in a private hospital, the hospital’s administrative team initiates the Registro Civil process, but the family remains responsible for appointing a funeral director and making transport arrangements.
The documentation chain
1. Certificado de defunción from Registro Civil Dénia. 2. Forense clearance (in sudden deaths, Juzgado de Instrucción Dénia). 3. Licencia de traslado de cadáver al extranjero from Conselleria de Sanitat. 4. Embalming certificate. 5. Zinc-lined coffin certification (required for air transport over 24 hours). 6. IATA cargo documentation — ALC to LHR or LGW.

Airport and cargo routing
Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández Airport (ALC, 80km south of Dénia) is the departure airport for cargo from Marina Alta. British Airways and Iberia operate ALC-LHR; Ryanair/easyJet flights to Gatwick and Stansted also carry cargo. Most international funeral directors use the BA route for UK repatriations from Alicante. Road transfer from Dénia to ALC takes approximately 75 minutes via the AP-7 motorway.
Long-stay resident considerations
British nationals who have lived in Spain for many years present specific complications at death. A will registered with a Spanish notary (testamento notarial) may affect estate administration in both Spain and the UK simultaneously. If the deceased was registered as an EU citizen prior to Brexit and subsequently re-registered as a non-EU resident under Law 14/2013, their residency status affects inheritance tax. The British Consulate Alicante can advise on contacting SOLICITORS del ICAB (Bar Association) for Spanish estate matters. None of this prevents repatriation, but it should be managed alongside it rather than left until afterwards.
