Repatriation from Menorca, Spain
Specific guidance for arranging repatriation from Menorca. Local documentation contacts, airport cargo routes, and the typical process for cases originating in this area.
Menorca Airport (MAH, Mahón) is a seasonal airport with limited direct UK cargo capacity outside peak summer season. For most repatriation cases — particularly those outside June to September — the cargo for human remains routes via Palma de Mallorca (PMI, approximately 30 minutes by air or 4 hours by fast ferry), where British Airways operates the main UK cargo service from the Balearics. This routing requirement is the key logistical fact to confirm with the funeral director at the start of any Menorca case.
What the British Consulate does — and does not do
The British Consulate Palma de Mallorca (Carrer del Conqueridor 6, 07001 Palma) covers the entire Balearic Islands including Menorca, Ibiza, and Formentera.
The Consulate can: Register the death in UK consular records. Advise on the Spanish documentation chain. Provide a list of funeral homes in Menorca and Mallorca with repatriation experience.
The Consulate cannot: Repatriate the body. Pay any costs. Expedite the Juzgado process.

What Spanish law requires in Menorca
Under the Ley de Enjuiciamiento Criminal (LECrim) and the Ley de Registro Civil, sudden, violent, or unexplained deaths on Menorca are referred to the Juzgado de Guardia in Maó (Mahón) — the island’s judicial centre. The case is then assigned to a Juzgado de Instrucción de Maó. The Médico Forense assigned to Menorca conducts the forensic examination; the Institut de Medicina Legal de les Illes Balears (IML Balears) in Palma is the regional forensic authority.
Menorca’s court and forensic capacity is smaller than Palma’s. This can mean slightly longer processing times for forensic cases compared to Mallorca.
The documentation chain
1. Certificado de defunción (medical death certificate). From the treating physician or Médico Forense.
2. Inscripción en el Registro Civil de Maó. Registration at the Maó Civil Registry. Processing: 3 to 7 working days.
3. Licencia de exportación. International export licence issued by the Govern Balear’s Direcció General de Salut Pública, via the Menorca health administration.
4. Embalming certificate.
5. Freedom from infection certificate.
6. Certified Spanish-to-English translations where required by UK receiving authorities.
7. IATA cargo documentation — confirming the MAH to PMI transfer leg.

Airport and cargo routing
Menorca Airport (MAH) has direct UK services (easyJet, Jet2) in summer, but cargo for human remains typically routes via Palma (PMI) year-round due to better cargo infrastructure and British Airways’ PMI-LHR service. The licensed Menorca funeral director coordinates the inter-island transfer — either by air (30 minutes) or by fast ferry (approximately 4 hours via Baleàlia Ferries or Fred Olsen).
Timeline from Menorca
- Natural death with certified cause: 7 to 14 days
- Juzgado/forensic case: 14 to 28 days
- Extended investigation: 4 to 8 weeks
Key local considerations
Menorca draws a quieter and older British demographic than Ibiza or Mallorca’s resort areas. The south coast (Cala’n Porter, Sant Tomàs, Son Bou) has British-owned properties and long-stay British summer residents. Deaths among older British tourists and property owners are the primary category. Menorca is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve — the island has a smaller service infrastructure than Mallorca, so working with a Palma-based funeral home with Menorca experience is advisable.
