City repatriation guide
Repatriation from Koh Phi Phi, Thailand
Specific guidance for arranging repatriation from Koh Phi Phi. Local documentation contacts, airport cargo routes, and the typical process for cases originating in this area.
Repatriation from Koh Phi Phi is among the most logistically involved of any Thai destination. There is no airport on the island. All cases require a ferry transfer to the mainland before any formal process can begin. Add this to the standard Thai police process and Bangkok cargo routing, and the realistic minimum timeline for a straightforward case from Koh Phi Phi is 21 to 28 days. Police investigation cases run 4 to 8 weeks.
The island transfer problem
Koh Phi Phi has no road connection to the mainland and no airstrip. The only departure options are:
- Ferry to Krabi: Approximately 90 minutes. Ferries operate multiple daily services but weather can suspend them — the Andaman Sea between November and April is generally calm, but tropical storms and rough seas can delay departures by 12 to 48 hours.
- Ferry to Phuket: Approximately 90 minutes to 2 hours. Phuket is the larger hub and may offer faster cargo options.
- Speedboat charter: Faster but not standard for transporting remains.
The body cannot be formally removed from Koh Phi Phi until Krabi Provincial Police have attended, recorded the death, and authorised the transfer. The police must come to the island first. A police boat or ferry to the island adds 2 to 4 hours before the investigation can even begin.
What drives timeline variation
Straightforward natural death (21–28 days): Police attend on the island, authorise transfer, body moves to Krabi or Phuket. District death certificate issued. Bangkok cargo routing (as for Krabi). No post-mortem ordered.
Police investigation (4–8 weeks): Any drowning, traumatic death, or suspicious circumstance triggers a full investigation. The body is transferred to the provincial hospital in Krabi or the Vachira Phuket Hospital for the government post-mortem. The police file is closed in Krabi. Bangkok routing follows.
High season crowding: Koh Phi Phi sees its highest visitor numbers December to February and July to August. The Krabi Provincial Police respond to multiple incidents simultaneously in these periods. Do not assume that priority attention will be given to any single case.

Cargo routing from Koh Phi Phi
Once the body reaches the mainland (Krabi or Phuket), the cargo routing to Bangkok Suvarnabhumi (BKK) and onward to London Heathrow follows the same process as all southern Thailand cases. From Phuket, the domestic leg to BKK is 1.5 hours by air. From Krabi, approximately 1 hour. From BKK: direct or connecting cargo to LHR, approximately 11 to 13 hours.
Documentation required for export from Thailand:
- Thai death certificate (tabien kerd-tabien tai)
- Thai police report and post-mortem clearance
- Embalming certificate
- Freedom from infection certificate
- Export permit (Thai Ministry of Interior via district office)
- Airline cargo booking confirmation (BKK-LHR)
- Passport of the deceased
British consular contacts
The British Embassy in Bangkok manages all UK consular cases for Koh Phi Phi and the southern islands. There is no British consular presence in Krabi or on the islands. FCDO 24-hour emergency line: +44 (0)20 7008 5000.
Key local considerations
Koh Phi Phi’s beach bars and nightlife create conditions where alcohol is involved in a significant proportion of incidents. Thai police treat alcohol as an aggravating factor in their investigations; insurance policies should be checked carefully for alcohol-related exclusions.
The island’s famous beach geography — Phi Phi Don’s twin bays — means many drownings occur in areas with boat traffic and strong tidal currents. These are always investigated. Families should not assume that a drowning near a beach resort will be treated as a simple accidental death without investigation.
