City repatriation guide
Repatriation from Krabi, Thailand
Specific guidance for arranging repatriation from Krabi. Local documentation contacts, airport cargo routes, and the typical process for cases originating in this area.
Repatriation from Krabi to the UK takes 14 to 21 days in straightforward cases and 3 to 6 weeks where Thai police conduct a full investigation. Krabi is one of the more complex provincial origins for repatriation compared to Bangkok or Phuket, because Krabi Airport (KBV) is small, most UK cargo routes require connecting to Bangkok, and the Krabi Provincial Police investigative capacity is more limited than the Bangkok Metropolitan Police.
What drives timeline variation
Natural death certified at Krabi Hospital (14–21 days): The attending physician certifies the cause. Thai police are still notified — Thai law requires police notification of all deaths, not just suspicious ones. A police post-mortem may or may not be ordered. If no investigation is triggered, the district office (Amphur) processes the death certificate. Cargo routing via Bangkok Suvarnabhumi (BKK) adds 1 to 2 working days to the overall logistics.
Police investigation (3–6 weeks): Any death that is sudden, unattended, involves a foreigner in unusual circumstances, or where cause is unclear results in a Thai police investigation and government post-mortem (at the Provincial Hospital). The police file must be closed and a Thai death certificate (tabien kerd-tabien tai) issued before the body can leave Thailand. The British Embassy in Bangkok cannot override or accelerate this process.
Drowning deaths: Drowning is among the most common causes of death for British visitors to Krabi. All drowning cases require police investigation and a government post-mortem. Allow a minimum of 3 to 4 weeks. If the drowning occurred in open sea conditions or the body was recovered after delay, pathological degradation may extend the process further.

Krabi Airport cargo and Bangkok routing
Krabi Airport (KBV) operates domestic Thai routes and some international services to regional destinations. There are no direct UK cargo services from KBV. Human remains from Krabi route via Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK), either:
- By road (approximately 800 kilometres, 10 to 12 hours) — used for land-accessible cases
- By domestic Thai Airways or Bangkok Airways flight from KBV to BKK (approximately 1 hour)
From BKK, Thai Airways, British Airways, and Qatar Airways operate cargo services to London Heathrow. The total transit once aboard cargo is approximately 11 to 13 hours via direct or one-stop routing.
Documentation required for export from Thailand:
- Thai death certificate (tabien kerd-tabien tai, district office certified)
- Thai police report and post-mortem clearance
- Embalming certificate
- Freedom from infection certificate
- Export permit from the Thai Ministry of Interior (via district office)
- Airline cargo booking confirmation (BKK-LHR)
- Passport of the deceased
British consular contacts
The British Embassy is in Bangkok. For deaths in Krabi province, the Embassy manages consular registration remotely — there is no British consular presence in Krabi itself. Contact the Bangkok Embassy for all documentation queries. FCDO 24-hour emergency line: +44 (0)20 7008 5000.
Key local considerations
Krabi’s resorts — Ao Nang, Railay Beach, Koh Lanta — attract large numbers of British visitors. The combination of water activities, rock climbing on the limestone karst formations, and night-time bar areas creates a range of incident types. Alcohol-related accidents, sea-based incidents, and climbing falls are all common. All involve Thai police.
Travel insurance is critical. Confirm the policy covers repatriation from Thailand specifically and check the policy position on alcohol-related incidents, which many standard policies exclude for activity accidents (though not necessarily for medical repatriation).
