City repatriation guide
Repatriation from Fethiye, Turkey
Specific guidance for arranging repatriation from Fethiye. Local documentation contacts, airport cargo routes, and the typical process for cases originating in this area.
Fethiye holds an unusual position among Turkish towns. It is estimated to have one of the highest concentrations of British permanent residents of any city outside Western Europe — with communities settled in Fethiye town, Çaliş Beach, Ölüdeniz, Ovacık, Hisarönü, and Göcek. These are not holiday-home owners spending two weeks in summer. They are British nationals who have permanently relocated, many retired, who have built full lives, own property, run businesses, and have integrated into the local community. When a death occurs, it is not a tourist fatality managed through a resort hotel — it is a death in a home, sometimes with complex Turkish property and estate dimensions running alongside the repatriation process.
What the British Consulate does — and does not do
The British Consulate General Istanbul (Meşrutiyet Caddesi No. 34, Tepebaşı, Beyoğlu, Istanbul 34430) is the primary consular post for Turkey, with the British Embassy Ankara as the diplomatic mission. The British Consulate General Istanbul or the relevant Honorary British Consul covering the Muğla province area handles consular matters for Fethiye cases.
The Consulate can: Register the death in UK consular records. Advise on Turkish documentation for UK authorities. Provide a funeral director referral list.
The Consulate cannot: Repatriate the body. Pay any costs. Instruct Turkish legal or administrative authorities.
FCDO 24-hour emergency line: +44 (0)20 7008 5000.
What Turkish law requires
Under the Ceza Muhakemesi Kanunu (CMK), Law No. 5271 (2004), sudden, violent, or unexplained deaths are reported to Fethiye Cumhuriyet Başsavcılığı (the Fethiye Public Prosecutor). The prosecutor directs forensic examination if required. Post-mortems are conducted at Fethiye Devlet Hastanesi (Fethiye State Hospital, Çalış Mah., Fethiye) or referred to the Adli Tıp Kurumu (Council of Forensic Medicine, ATK) facility in Muğla for complex cases.
Death certificates (Ölüm Belgesi) are issued by the attending doctor and registered with the Fethiye Nüfus Müdürlüğü (Population Directorate).
The documentation chain
1. Turkish Death Certificate (Ölüm Belgesi / Ölüm Kayıt Örneği). Issued by doctor and registered with Fethiye Nüfus Müdürlüğü.
2. Prosecutor’s release (required in sudden or unnatural death cases).
3. International transport permit. Issued by T.C. Sağlık Bakanlığı (Ministry of Health Turkey) via the provincial directorate (İl Sağlık Müdürlüğü Muğla).
4. Embalming certificate.
5. IATA cargo documentation.

Airport and cargo routing
Dalaman Airport (DLM), approximately 45km east of Fethiye, is the departure point for international cargo. DLM has regular direct services to London Heathrow, London Gatwick, and Manchester operated by British Airways, easyJet, Jet2, and TUI, primarily in the summer season. Winter cargo options are more limited. For deaths in the winter months, the funeral director may route via Istanbul (IST) where year-round cargo capacity to London is available.
Timeline from Fethiye
- Hospital-certified natural death: 7 to 14 days
- Forensic investigation: 14 to 21 days
- Extended investigation: 4 to 8 weeks
Key local considerations
British permanent residents in Fethiye who own Turkish property face a particular complexity. Turkish inheritance law applies to property held in Turkey. While the repatriation proceeds independently of estate matters, the family often needs Turkish legal representation for the property dimension simultaneously. Local British expat networks in Fethiye (including the Fethiye British Residents Society) can provide referrals to English-speaking Turkish lawyers.
