Repatriation from Canada to Japan: what to expect

Canadian nationals in Japan include professionals, English teachers, and a community with Japanese family connections. Canada and Japan have a bilateral Economic Partnership Agreement (CJJEPA, 2012) and maintain close diplomatic ties. Canadian death certificates are in English or French. As Japan is a Hague Apostille member, Canadian documentation can be apostilled rather than requiring full consular legalisation. The Japanese Embassy in Ottawa handles consular matters. (Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, 2025.)
